Title:  Neighborhood Organizer

Work Schedule:  Full time, 40 hours per week, evening and weekend work required

Compensation:   $30,000 to $35,000 annually plus benefits

Under the supervision of the Neighborhood Planner, the Neighborhood Organizer will collaborate with the YNDC team to coordinate grassroots neighborhood organizing campaigns related to safety and blight, work with residents to facilitate community workdays and positive events, and identify and develop neighborhood leaders. 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Engage YSU student groups, churches, businesses, city schools, Neighborhood Action Teams, neighborhood groups, and other community institutions and stakeholders to improve the quality of life in Youngstown neighborhoods.
  2. Work with Neighborhood Action Teams and neighborhood groups to increase membership and engagement of resident populations that are not adequately represented in existing neighborhood groups and new residents that have not otherwise been engaged.
  3. Plan and facilitate leadership development trainings with partners and qualified trainers.
  4. Engage south side business owners and institutions as part of the South Revitalization Project (DOJ Byrne) Crime Reduction Strategy.
  5. Work with residents to develop competitive Neighborhood SUCCESS grant applications, youth greening grant applications and other community based grant opportunities that reuse vacant properties in their neighborhoods.
  6. Work with YNDC staff and neighborhood groups to develop neighborhood action campaigns.
  7. Work with Neighborhood Action Teams and neighborhood groups to facilitate community clean ups, work days, block parties, youth activity, and other positive events.
  8. Work collaboratively with YNDC Safe Routes to School Coordinator to increase safety around city elementary schools and encourage walking and bicycling of students.

Requirements

  1. High school diploma and bachelor’s degree in business administration, finance, urban planning, social studies, real estate development, or related field preferred.
  2. Previous experience with community organizing is preferred.
  3. Excellent written/oral communication and listening skills, strong interpersonal skills, and ability to utilize new technologies for communication.
  4. Experience and ability to utilize Microsoft Office programs.
  5. Genuine interest in the development of people and neighborhoods in Youngstown, Ohio.
  6. Respect for economic and cultural diversity and experience working with diverse groups of people.
  7. Ability to engage and develop a broad and diverse group of neighborhood residents to improve the quality of life in their neighborhoods.
  8. Ability to engage a broad and diverse group of community leaders, organizations, businesses, and institutions to improve the quality of life in their neighborhoods.
  9. General knowledge of community development, YNDC programs and other community services.
  10. Ability to manage multiple projects/workloads simultaneously and prioritize effectively.
  11. Ability to proactively solve problems with sound judgment and intuition.
  12. High level of professional ethics.
  13. Must have valid Ohio driver’s license.
  14. Must be drug free.
