We are currently looking to hire a part time dispatcher, 16-24 hours per scheduled week for a mix of afternoon, evening and/or mid-nights, scheduling is not set and will/could change weekly. Experience a plus but not required, will train. Extra shifts are available during employee vacations or call offs.

Must be able to multi-task, handle multi-phone lines and radios. Dispatchers are responsible for answering the phone and taking down information from police departments, fire departments, open accounts, general customers, etc. This requires an extreme amount attention to detail as well as knowledge of the geographical area. Dispatchers must be able to remain calm during the phone conversation even with the most irritated customers. Applicants must be local to and familiar with the geographical area. Applicants must be 23 years of age or older with a clean background check and clean drug screen.

This position does include weekends.

By answering all calls in a prompt, efficient, and professional manner and dispatching appropriate responders in a timely fashion in helping to assist citizens in their time of need.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class is responsible for receiving radio and telephone messages, answering public safety calls and dispatching units as requested or necessary. After an initial training period under close supervision, employees are assigned to a shift to receive calls and dispatch appropriate personnel in accordance with established procedures. Work also includes operating a computer terminal connected to the The Towbooks Dispatching System. Considerable tact and firmness are required in obtaining information from distressed persons. The employee must exercise independent judgment and initiative in receiving messages, responding to emergency situations, and dispatching calls. Work is performed in accordance with standard departmental policies and procedures and is supplemented by specific instructions as necessary. Work is performed under the general supervision of a Telecommunicator Supervisor and Managers, and is evaluated in terms of adherence to company policies and procedures and by accuracy and effectiveness of dispatching.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

Graduation from high school; or an equivalent combination of experience and training. Must be 23 years of age or older. Must have a valid driver's license.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Work Schedule:

16-24 hours a week

Days and Shifts will vary between afternoons, evenings, mid-night shifts, week days and weekends.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK

On an assigned shift, operates telephone, radio, and other communications equipment in answering requests of law enforcement, fire departments, The Ohio Turnpike Dispatch and related assistance.

Obtains pertinent information over the telephone and dispatches the appropriate unit in a timely manner.

Operates multiple radio systems.

Operates a computer terminal connect with The Towbooks Dispatching System.

Maintains a computer aided dispatch database logging all requests for service, call status updates, and driver locations.

Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Working knowledge of the geographical layout of The Ohio Turnpike, Mahoning County, Trumbull County and the surrounding areas, as to location of streets, important buildings, and other landmarks.

Working knowledge of the operation of radio equipment.

Working knowledge of the operation of a sophisticated telephone system.

Ability to elicit information necessary for proper dispatching from persons who may be distressed.

Ability to exercise sound judgment in emergency situations.

Ability to speak clearly, distinctly and professionally.

Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the public.

Ability to maintain files, records and reports.

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
